Strathclyde 36 years old 1977 The Sovereign Review

By Miguel in Uncategorized

Tasting today a very old Strathclyde from Hunter Laing, I have tender love to such old grain whiskies… when they are young usually grain whiskies tastes of nothing at best but put them a few decades on a oak cask and the result is usually surpraising.

“Quite an experience. I think it is my first sherried grain whisky... delightfully sherried if you ask me”

Strathclyde 36 Year Old 1977 (cask 9912) - The Sovereign (Hunter Laing)

This dram has a mahogany-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. honey, varnish, spices, citrus, cinnamon, candies, raisins.

Palate (93): powerful, oily. honey, sulphur, raisins, wood, citrus, cinnamon, salt, spices, candies.

Finish (92): longer than average. honey, raisins, sulphur, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Strathclyde 36 Year Old 1977 (cask 9912) - The Sovereign (Hunter Laing) with 92 points over 100.

Miguel says…

It is always a pleasure to taste this kind of whiskies.

The Balkan Tiger and the Ardbeg's whispers

Welcome to a new session of my random blind tastings! This one is WTF Tasting 003.

If you recall previous sessions, one of my biggest “problems” with whisky tasting was to make my mind to choose a set of drams to taste. I love peated whiskies and mid age sherried drams but once you start tasting one after the other it becomes a bit plain ( with great surprises from time to time )… so why not just add some spices into the mix?

-1

WTF Whisky Tastings is just a new fun way of lowering my samples’ box level with a flight of four and five random drams taking blindly from the box.

So here are this week flight…

Whisky experiments: (almost) World best whisky liqueur ever

By Miguel in Uncategorized , Tasting

What would you do with a bottle of the cheapest scotch whisky money can buy?

Well, I though about just throwing it by the sink but then you won’t be reading this awesome investigation article. I could have throw it in some connoiseurs blind tasting but they would hate me for that.

So I decided to use it to do a better-than-the-original whisky liqueur.

So how do you do a whisky liqueur? It is easy! Just add honey, lots of honey and spices and fruits. Sounds easy? Well, I have to say that my respect for liqueur brands has increased as a direct result of my learnings with this experience. It isn’t so easy.

Glenisla 1977 28 years old Signatory Cask Strength Collection

By Miguel in Uncategorized , Tasting , Glen Keith

“Uaagh! Added to my list of whisky I should avoid

79
Glenisla 1977 / 28 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
A Signatory bottling of Glenisla, an experimental malt whisky distilled at Glen Keith using lightly peated malt and distilled heavily peated water. Slightly mad and very rare.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (79): more than average. honey, many floral, pepperoni . Very floral and then really strange. I swear it smells of saucisson. Unpleasant.

Palate (79): smooth, powerful. floral, spices, wood, pepper, pepperoni.

Finish (80): longer than average. floral, plums, dried apricots, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenisla 1977 / 28 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 79 points over 100.
