Isle of Jura 16 years old Review #whiskyadvent

By Miguel in Tasting , Isle of Jura

Day 4 of Maverick Drinks’ Whisky Advent Calendar. A quite special Jura. This Jura 16 years old is a fantastic experience. The first time I tasted it I really disliked it but someone told me that I was wrong that it was a good whisky, so I ordered a sample from Master of Malt and gave it a new try, and found a completely different whisky. The closest thing to a Macallan that you can get from outside the Highlands.

“I have an old bottle of the Jura 16 years old and it is way better than this, pretty big changes between batches. It still have that lovely tobacco leaves aroma that only old Macallan used to have”

89
Isle of Jura 16 year
'With the smoothness of the 10 year-old allied to extra complexity from more ageing, this is a winner. 'A delicious and sophisticated dram with impressive depth and almost perfect weight.' Jim Murray

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. honey, citrus, sherry, chocolate, raisins, spices.

Palate (89): powerful, oily. honey, tobacco, vanilla, citrus, spices, chocolate, rubber.

Finish (89): longer than average. honey, citrus, tobacco leaves.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Isle of Jura 16 year with 89 points over 100.

Talisker Port Ruighe, Jura 1999 XU, Arran Eagle and Cutty Storm

By Miguel in Tasting , Arran , Cutty Sark , Isle of Jura , Talisker

A few weeks after tasting Talisker Storm I knew that Talisker was releasing another bottling, this time finished in Port casks: Talisker Port Ruighe.

talisker port rhugie

You can imagine how I felt!. I am not what you would call a fan of Talisker but I really enjoy the peat and pepper character of its whiskies and I have been in love with it since I tasted some of Talisker oldest bottles. I tried by all the means to get a sample from the distillery but…

no

I have had to wait for the guys of Master of Malt to released it in their drink by the dram section ( God bless them! ). So just to complete the tasting I added other whiskies that I were really interested in tasting: A Jura 1999 Bourbon XU, a now discontinued Arran The Eagle and the new Cutty Storm.

I have no idea how each of them are, but the Jura that says heavily peated… so let’s begin with the blended whisky.

Jura 50th anniversary Tweet Tasting #Jura50TT

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Isle of Jura

Jura Distillery is making its 50th anniversary of its reopening this year. So they decided to do an awesome tweet tasting with fifty bloggers from all around the world and organized by Steve Rush from The Whisky Wire.

I have been a big fan of Jura since I rediscovered their sherried whiskies a few years ago. In each of them you can feel the great nose of Mr Richard Paterson. Great whiskies they are in fact.

So who of you would say no to a tasting of five Jura whiskies? Not me really.

On the way from Scotland to home one of the samples got broken. RIP dear friend.
I have to say that I had already tasted the 30 years old Camas An Staca and I was quite happy about it. But about the rest I have no clue about what we were drinking.

Tasting Jura Superstition

By Miguel in Tasting , Isle of Jura

“Very nice Jura whisky. Peater and more complex than Jura 10yo. Very nice whisky”

89
Isle of Jura Superstition
A union of two Jura malt whisky styles: one bold, strong and peated, the other warm and delicate. This unique whisky is created from the marriage of traditional Islay style peated barley and a selection of aged malts.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. peat, citrus, honey, pepper, vanilla. Better, more like an Islay whisky. I like.

Palate (89): powerful, oily. peat, wood, honey, citrus, earth. Almost great!

Finish (89): longer than average. cocoa, honey.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Isle of Jura Superstition with 89 points over 100.
