The Whisky Barrel's Burns Malt Exclusive bottlings

By Miguel in Linkwood , Tobermory , Springbank , Littlemill

The whisky fairy ringed my door a few days ago with a set of exclusive bottles for The Whisky Barrel. A nice set of single cask, cask strength whiskies from Springbank, Tobermory, Linkwood and a stunning Littlemill.

burns-malt-range-2013

I have reviewed on the past several exclusive whiskies from The Whisky Barrel and they bottle quite fantastic drams for their Burns Malt series, so my expectations for this set of samples is quite high… let’s see if they live to it!

Burns Malts by The Whisky Barrel, it feels like robbing them

By Miguel in Tasting , Bunnahabhain , Springbank , Dailuaine , Caperdonich , Longmorn , Braes of Glenlivet

What an incredible way of starting my holidays. I was at home sorting and cleaning stuff when the DHL guy appeared with a box bigger than usual for a sample. My Wife looked me suspiciously and I had to swear that this time it was true; I haven’t ordered anything.

[Note to self: it worked! Next time try with full size bottles]

I checked the parcel and it has a reference; BMALTS. Ummm…

I was getting excited because I had read a week before a nice press release about the six new whiskies bottled by The Whisky Barrel for their Burns Malt range and I was really wondering how good they were.

I tasted before a previous release of Littlemill and Bunnahabhain and I really enjoyed them.

So I usually place samples I get on a box and taste them as I please but this time I just did a from parcel to table session.

The six new whiskies belong to a range of single malts bottled by The Whisky Barrel to commemorate Robert Burns, Scotland’s favorite son and poet.

Oh, I can’t wait! Let’s taste the whiskies.

Rundlets & Kilderkins: Springbank and Longrow

By Miguel in Tasting , Springbank

I recently bought a bottle of Longrow Rundlets and Kilderins and thought it was a great opportunity of tasting it side by side with the Springbank released last year.

Both whiskies are matured in smaller, 60 and 80 litres, casks that helps speed up the maturation of the spirit ( mainly the woody character, the rest need years and years whatever the size of the cask. I learnt it the hard way… )

So the whiskies…

Master of Malt Single Cask: Whiskies dram-arathon!

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Arran , Bunnahabhain , Master of Malt , Tobermory , Springbank , Clynelish , Auchentoshan , Tormore , Braes of Glenlivet

As I was writing you yesterday, whisky fairy knocked my door with a box ( well, two in fact ) full of whisky samples of Master of Malt’s Single Cask Whiskies.

Apart of three very interesting That Boutique-y whiskies, the box had eleven samples of the new bottling, that if you know them are stunning most of times… just thinking of this Bowmore, this Glenturret or … ejem… well… to the point, about these eleven single cask whiskies.

Kids! Don’t do this at home! Eleven drams, one evening. Let’s find the best one.

That Boutique-y new bottles: Invergordon, Springbank and Bowmore

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Master of Malt , Bowmore , Springbank , Invergordon

Whisky fairy knocked a few days ago at home with a huge amount of samples from Master of Malt new bottlings, three new That Boutique-y whiskies and almost a dozen of their latest Single Cask releases.

I will taste today the three That Boutique-y whiskies: Invergordon, Springbank and Bowmore. They are a range of bottles crafted in small batches of which I reviewed seven of them just a few months ago ( many of them sold out by now unfortunately for you ).

One of the things I love about these bottling are the awesome labels… well and the fact that the whiskies inside the bottle are great. Let’s taste them…

Ferrari or Maserati? Springbank Cask 129 or Cask 482?

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Springbank

What do you prefer a Ferrari or a Maserati? a BMW or a Mercedes? The lovely Springbank from cask 129 or the one 482?

Master of Malt has a similar problem to choose a cask for Springbank for their Single Casks bottles range. And instead of flipping coin and choosing one they shared with several bloggers the decision.

And I have to say it has been a really hard decision. Both casks are fantastic, one of them is full of raw fruity and vanilla power and the other is a serene subtle well-matured single malt. What to choose?! Oh why?! I prefer the …

Oh! You better read the tasting notes and help me decide.

Springbank 15 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Springbank

“Good Springbank but my heart belongs to the great Springbank CV.”

88
Springbank 15 year
A 15 year old from the Springbank distillery with plenty of sherry notes and spice, dried fruits and nuts.

Distilled at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown, this single malt whisky is the return of a classic.

It is very nice, but I personally prefer the Springbank CV bottling.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (88): more than average. honey, citrus, vanilla, apples, floral.

Palate (89): smooth, powerful, oily. honey, peat, citrus, vanilla, pepper, floral, wood.

Finish (87): longer than average. honey, floral, smoke.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Springbank 15 year with 88 points over 100.

Longrow 10 years old 100 proof Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Springbank

“Shocking nose! Looks much older than the 46% ABV version. Great whisky!”

92
Longrow 10 year 100 proof
A 10 year old Longrow from the Springbank distillery.

Longrow is a peated single malt distilled at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. This Longrow 10 years old has been matured in bourbon casks before bottling at 100 proof.

It is surprising how much better this whisky is compared to the standard 46% bottle.

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (92): powerful. peat, honey, wood, incense, earth, floral.

Palate (92): oily, powerful. peat, floral, citrus, wood, spices, honey, earth.

Finish (91): long. peat, floral, wood.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Longrow 10 year 100 proof with 92 points over 100.

Springbank 10 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Springbank

“Rather good with a good amount of peat and honey and that floral theme playing along all the way.”

90
Springbank 10 year
Blended from a mixture of Bourbon and sherry casks, the light colour of this malt belies the richness of its character. The nose has a wide range of aromas, from citrus fruits to pears and a hint of peat, while the palate shows touches of smoke, vanilla essence, nutmeg, cinnamon and the salty tang characteristic of the distillery.

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (90): strong. peat, honey, citrus, floral.

Palate (90): smooth, oily, powerful. peat, floral, honey, malt, citrus.

Finish (90): long. peat, wood, floral.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Springbank 10 year with 90 points over 100.
