Darkness Single Malt Whiskies: Sherry treats

By Miguel in Tasting , Ardbeg , The Macallan , Master of Malt , Clynelish , Benrinnes

Welcome to the Darkness… Darkness is a range of single malt whiskies finished, and some of them aged, in sherry casks to give them that characteristic dark color that is a promise of spices, christmas aromas, cocoa and nuts.

Maverick Drinks send me five samples of their initial batch, an Ardbeg 21 years old finished in PX between them. I were going to explain you about how it was done and what was the finish process and what it does mean to whisky… but I am so anxious to taste them that I don’t really want to lose any more time on small talk.

Signatory Clynelish 1995 17 years old Reviews

By Miguel in Tasting , Clynelish

The last of the whiskies that I tasted at The Whisky Show in the Signatory stand. This Clynelish is another really good whisky… but I really get sad when I think of Brora.

“An awesome Clynelish aged in a sherry cask to perfection. Highly recommended”

92

A single cask bottling of 1995 vintage Clynelish, chosen by The Whisky Exchange and bottled by Signatory after 17 years' maturation in a refill sherry butt.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (92): more than average. nuts, powder, honey, citrus, spices, smoke, wood.

Palate (92): . nuts, powder, spices, wood, honey, citrus.

Finish (92): longer than average. spices, wood, honey.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Clynelish 1995/ 17 Year Old/ Sherry #12794/Signatory for TWE Highland Whisky with 92 points over 100.

Miguel says…

Nice way of blending sherry and smoke. A delicious very recommendable whisky if you ask me.

Clynelish 1993 Distillers Edition Oloroso Sherry Review

By Miguel in Clynelish

Just next to the lost Brora distillery there is a copy of it named Clynelish that produces a similar malt whisky, or so they say. The true is that there is nothing like old Brora whiskies and Clynelish whiskies that I have tasted are nowhere near it.

This Clynelish that I review today is part of the Distillers Edition that Diageo releases annually from their distilleries stable ( You should really check their Lagavulin and Talisker, that’s true good stuff )

“Interesting whisky but it won't shake your world neither”

Clynelish 1993 Oloroso Sherry - Distillers Edition

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (89): more than average. honey, citrus, spices, hazelnuts, floral.

Palate (89): powerful, oily. honey, nuts, wood, citrus, floral, vanilla.

Finish (89): longer than average. honey, wood, citrus.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Clynelish 1993 Oloroso Sherry - Distillers Edition with 89 points over 100.

I think you can buy better things with your money. But still it is a good whisky that is a bit short of being really great and enjoyable.

Master of Malt Single Cask: Whiskies dram-arathon!

By Miguel in Tasting , Featured , Arran , Bunnahabhain , Master of Malt , Tobermory , Springbank , Clynelish , Auchentoshan , Tormore , Braes of Glenlivet

As I was writing you yesterday, whisky fairy knocked my door with a box ( well, two in fact ) full of whisky samples of Master of Malt’s Single Cask Whiskies.

Apart of three very interesting That Boutique-y whiskies, the box had eleven samples of the new bottling, that if you know them are stunning most of times… just thinking of this Bowmore, this Glenturret or … ejem… well… to the point, about these eleven single cask whiskies.

Kids! Don’t do this at home! Eleven drams, one evening. Let’s find the best one.
