Glenmorangie Companta Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie

After Jim Murray named Ealanta Best Whisky of the World in 2013, I knew I were going to have problems sourcing the new release of Glenmorangie, Companta. As I trust Jim no more, I wanted to taste Companta on my own before buying because the price wasn’t really that interesting and I usually don’t enjoy Glenmorangie whiskies…

So I got the sample and now the time to taste it, and here is my review.

“Not a fan of Glenmorangie but this is quite a sensational whisky that unfortunatelly fly off the shelves bought by people who will never taste it. A pity”

90
Glenmorangie Companta Private Edition

This dram has a tawny-like color.

Nose (92): more than average. honey, fruits, pinneapple, pears, wood, vanilla, plums, toffee.

Palate (89): powerful, oily. honey, wood, cocoa, citrus, fruits, plums, apples, vanilla.

Finish (90): longer than average. fruits, wood, cocoa.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie Companta Private Edition with 90 points over 100.

Miguel says…

Umm, a really nice whisky. And these are words from a man that dislike both Glenmo whiskies and sweet wines finishes. I really regret not having bought one.

Flaviar: Whisky Samples At Your Door

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie , Glengoyne , Old Pulteney , Dalmore , Glen Garioch

You know that much, if not all, of the whisky that I drink for A Wardrobe of Whisky comes from samples. You can’t imagine how hard is to get decent whiskies here in the south of Spain, well.. you can easily get great whiskies like Chivas Regal 12 years old or the all-mighty Johnnie Walker Black Label ( Oh God, Take my live! ). So as you can see most of my experience comes from samples which it is a great way of tasting new malts for a fraction of the price.

It is always good news to welcome a new samples bottler, Flaviar, on the arena. But what Flaviar does different from the rest of players?

flaviar-tasting-pack

Flaviar features a monthly subscription service where you get a pack of five samples with enough whisky for three persons to taste it. The idea of Flaviar is to be an exploration tool, helping beginners in discovering the world of spirits, while for the more experienced spirits lovers it’s a great way of discovering new drinks and keeping their spirit shelves updated without wrong purchases. If I had had such chance when I started drinking whisky… I have now a full wardrobe full of vile whiskies that I don’t dare drink ( yes, you know who am I talking about! )

As well as the pack of five 5ml samples you get also some “experts” insights as well as tasting instructions ( quite useful really for newcomers ) and fun trivia games. One thing quite fun is the fact that each pack is theme like “Schnaps of the Alps”, “There were pirates” or “Whisky’s Big in Japan” and they came in a precious little black box.
Each of the samples is labelled with the spirit inside and its strength ( note to Flaviar: Blind tastings are usually more fun, just an idea ).

My pack was called “Highlanders: There can be only one” and features five Highlands whiskies, some of them tasted some years ago in this blog. So let’s taste the whisky.

Glenrothes and Westport: Tasting the new Burns Malt Whiskies

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie , Glenrothes

As you know online whisky shop TheWhiskyBarrel.com released a few months ago a quite interesting range of whiskies bottled at cask strength from a single cask which I reviewed here. Today I review their latest two additions, a Glenrothes 25 years old and a mysterious Westport 15 years old.

First of all, I really want to thank the Whisky Barrel for these samples as it has been a real nightmare to get them. DHL has broken the parcel twice, one of them destroying all the samples inside and the second time destroying a Tomatin 12 years old. Really if you need to send something use another company. Thankfully on the last try, the Glenrothes and Westport arrived safe although the parcel was damaged too.

Well, anyway… Let me introduce you the whiskies. I tasted first Westport, mainly because it was the youngest.

Glenmorangie LaSanta Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie

“A whisky spoiled by sulphur. Better than a previous batch that I tried but still... not my kind of whisky.”

81
Glenmorangie Lasanta
Lasanta is the replacement for the old Glenmorangie Sherry Finish although, to be fair, this new one is a bit stronger at 46%. It says here that 'Lasanta' means 'Warmth and Passion' in Gaelic, which is nice.

This dram has a amber-like color.

Nose (79): more than average. honey, sulphur, wood, floral, almonds. Rather spoiled by a dominant bad sulphur aroma.

Palate (82): light, smooth, powerful. honey, sulphur, nuts, wood, oloroso, floral, citrus. Better that I remember, but still not a nice whisky. Just imagine a sherry monster whisky that does it best not to be a sherried whisky.

Finish (82): average. honey, sulphur, wood, floral.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie Lasanta with 81 points over 100.

Glenmorangie Finealta Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie

“A five stars Glenmorangie with peaches, honey and a bit of smoke notes.”

91
Glenmorangie Finealta
Very, very unusual for Glenmorangie (though not for current whisky trends), they've gone and peated it. This was distilled from Lightly peated barley, to an original recipe dating back to 1903. This was aged in American oak and Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a whisky with sweet vanilla and lime notes, hints of sherry and an interesting whiff of peat smoke.

This dram has a cooper-like color.

Nose (91): strong. peaches, grapes, citrus, honey, vanilla, malt.

Palate (92): smooth, oily, powerful. peaches, floral, citrus, honey, vanilla, wood, cinnamon, wax.

Finish (90): long. floral, citrus, peaches, wood, smoke.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie Finealta with 91 points over 100.

Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Recommended , Glenmorangie

“ One of the best flavours in the honey vanilla range that I remember. Think of Ballantine’s Finest, but with a more powerful nose and taste. Also the sherry, that reminded my of Fino, not pedro ximenez is simply delicious.”

93
Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX
Sonnalta PX is the newest addition to the Glenmorangie Private Collection, following on from the fantastic Astar.

This was named PX for its sherry finish in sweet Pedro Ximnez dessert sherry casks. The word Sonnalta is Gaelic for "Generous", a fitting title for this luxurious whisky.

One of the best Glenmorangie single malts that I have tried. Highly recommended.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (92): inexistent. fruits, wine sherry, citrus, wood, honey, vanilla. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (96): . sherry, wood, vanilla, almonds, nuts, citrus. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (92): no finish. vanilla and honey. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX with 93 points over 100.

Glenmorangie 18 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie
85
Glenmorangie 18 year
The 18 year-old has always been one of the best of Glenmorangie's core range and, in common with all Glenmo's offerings these days, it really looks the part. Picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (84): inexistent. floral, many floral, sweet, oak, vanilla, honey. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (88): . sweet, grain, oak, honey, vanilla, grass, oak. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (84): no finish. grain, wood, smoke. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie 18 year with 85 points over 100.

Glenmorangie The Astar Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie
87
Glenmorangie The AStar
The Astar bottling from Glenmorangie is a second incarnation of the much-loved Artisan cask bottling from several years ago. A massive dram, with huge spices - a drop of water is the sensible option.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (84): inexistent. floral, really closed, wood, spices. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (92): . sweet, floral, fruits: grapes and dates, oloroso, pears. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (84): no finish. fruity, wood, hot, malt. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie The AStar with 87 points over 100.

Glenmorangie Nectar D'or Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie
88
Glenmorangie Nectar D'or
The Bordeaux vineyards of south western France lend their grand heritage to Nectar D'or through Glenmorangie's use of Sauternes wine barriques to 'finish' The Original single malt whisky. Infused with the signature honey, citrus and spice aroma of the Sauternes dessert wine that lingers in the wooden casks, the result is a whisky of exquisite sophistication and complexity. The resultant elixir takes on the pale, lemony, gold transparency and honeyed taste that inspired it's name.

This dram has a white-like color.

Nose (84): inexistent. delicate, floral, a little fruity, pears, citrus. First nosing data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Palate (96): . sweet, floral, pears, sweet plums, honey, vanilla, wood. Bouquet data is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

Finish (84): no finish. wood, honey. Finish length is innacurate as the previous tasting sheet lacked of this field.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Glenmorangie Nectar D'or with 88 points over 100.
