Old Pulteney Navigator Review

By Miguel in Old Pulteney

Woo, I need to force myself into actually writting the reviews because I write the tasting notes and just let them sit there for myself… such selfishness

Well, today I am here with a review of Old Pulteney Navigator, a duty-free whisky from this highland distillery that was the crafter of Old Pulteney 21 years old, the best whisky in the world… or so Jim Murray says…

Personally I don’t enjoy much the profile of Old Pulteney whiskies. They are nice but they don’t hit me on the soft spot as well as other drams: it is not enough peated, not enough salty, nor enough sherried. But anyway… let’s review it with that in mind.

“Not my kind of whisky... but it has a taste that remind me of a smoky & salty Balvenie 12 years old. Interesting”

87
Old Pulteney Navigator Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Released in 2013 to coincide with their sponsoring of a yacht in the Clipper Round the World Race, Old Pulteney Navigator was created to reflect the distillery's rich maritime heritage. It is matured in ex American bourbon and ex Spanish Sherry casks and bottled at 46%.

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (86): more than average. honey, citrus, wood, spices, cinnamon, salt, smoke.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. honey, wood, vanilla, spices, toffee, cinnamon, smoke, salt.

Finish (88): longer than average. honey, wood, spices.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Old Pulteney Navigator Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 87 points over 100.

As i said it is a decent whisky but not my kind of whisky. I would rather put my money somewhere else…

Old Pulteney 30 years old Review

By Miguel in Tasting , Old Pulteney

Jim Murray named Old Pulteney the best whisky in the world a few years ago… that was when I was young and I believed that the poor guy even care about tasting his whiskies. I bought a Old Pulteney 21yo because everyone was mad about (buying) it. So it came the day when I open the bottle and tasted it… it was much like when Dorothy meets the Great Oz.

But forget it… this Old Pulteney 30 years old is made with the same stuff dreams are created.

“Respect! Maybe the best Old Pulteney whisky I have had. This could really have been Best Whisky of the World”

92
Old Pulteney 30 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
70cl / 44% / Distillery Bottling - A much-anticipated addition to the Old Pulteney range, this 30yo has had extremely favourable reviews and, thankfully, this looks like living up to expectations and justifying the pricetag.

This dram has a fino-like color.

Nose (91): more than average. candies, flowers, citrus, vanilla, spices. Respect!

Palate (93): smooth, oily. candies, spices, citrus, flowers, vanilla, wood, cinnamon, pears.

Finish (92): longer than average. candies, spices, vanilla.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Old Pulteney 30 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with 92 points over 100.

Well, it is expensive but it is also damn good. I would buy it if I have the money… and I can’t say the same about their 21 years old.

Flaviar: Whisky Samples At Your Door

By Miguel in Tasting , Glenmorangie , Glengoyne , Old Pulteney , Dalmore , Glen Garioch

You know that much, if not all, of the whisky that I drink for A Wardrobe of Whisky comes from samples. You can’t imagine how hard is to get decent whiskies here in the south of Spain, well.. you can easily get great whiskies like Chivas Regal 12 years old or the all-mighty Johnnie Walker Black Label ( Oh God, Take my live! ). So as you can see most of my experience comes from samples which it is a great way of tasting new malts for a fraction of the price.

It is always good news to welcome a new samples bottler, Flaviar, on the arena. But what Flaviar does different from the rest of players?

flaviar-tasting-pack

Flaviar features a monthly subscription service where you get a pack of five samples with enough whisky for three persons to taste it. The idea of Flaviar is to be an exploration tool, helping beginners in discovering the world of spirits, while for the more experienced spirits lovers it’s a great way of discovering new drinks and keeping their spirit shelves updated without wrong purchases. If I had had such chance when I started drinking whisky… I have now a full wardrobe full of vile whiskies that I don’t dare drink ( yes, you know who am I talking about! )

As well as the pack of five 5ml samples you get also some “experts” insights as well as tasting instructions ( quite useful really for newcomers ) and fun trivia games. One thing quite fun is the fact that each pack is theme like “Schnaps of the Alps”, “There were pirates” or “Whisky’s Big in Japan” and they came in a precious little black box.
Each of the samples is labelled with the spirit inside and its strength ( note to Flaviar: Blind tastings are usually more fun, just an idea ).

My pack was called “Highlanders: There can be only one” and features five Highlands whiskies, some of them tasted some years ago in this blog. So let’s taste the whisky.

The Mermaid, the Witch and the Beauty: WTF Tasting 002

By Miguel in Tasting , Old Pulteney , Glenrothes , anCnoc , Glenury Royal

Ouch! After a fantastic beginning with the WTF Tasting, I am back with a second WTF blind tasting.

beauty-grandma-mermaid

Again, just in case you are new to this, my new way of tasting, I introduce my hand in the samples box and grab four or five samples of whatever it is inside: single malts, blended, rums, gins, vodka, whatever means whatever!.

What in my opinion makes this kind of tasting so awesome is the surprise factor. You have absolutely no idea of what you are tasting so only color and the beverage itself can make you rate it, no prices, no fancy bottles, no stunning statements, no marketing, just pure whisky passion. [NOTE to self: Buy opaque tasting glasses]

Well, let’s see what the f*** I tasted…

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2012 took place at October 6th and 7th and although it has been a great experience it has been a short one. With over 450 whiskies to taste and just barely six hours ahead it was impossible to taste them all.

What I couldn’t taste

This post is just a set of photos of what I couldn’t taste. Sorry, people… I can write about this because I get sad… so great stuff that I had to skip… *sniff*

I visited Compass Box stand for saying hi to Chris and I take a few photos with the people on the show.

Old Pulteney 21 years old Tasting note

By Miguel in Tasting , Old Pulteney

“Lots of sherry inside this Old Pulteney whisky. Interesting nose but I don't think this is the best whisky of 2012.”

89
Old Pulteney 21 year
Bottled unchillfiltered, this is much more intense than you usually find with Pulteney. Lots of gingery, peppery spices on the palate. We always thought this was very good, but Jim Murray just declared it the best whisky in the world!

This dram has a gold-like color.

Nose (90): more than average. fruits, honey, peat, salt, peaches, sulphur. A bearable note of sulphur.

Palate (88): powerful, oily. honey, fruits, peat, cocoa, tobacco, vanilla, nuts. A heavy oloroso sherry theme.

Finish (88): longer than average. peat, cocoa, wood, nuts.

So based on other whiskies I have already tasted I rate this Old Pulteney 21 year with 89 points over 100.
